Isn’t it amazing to see people achieve their goals and their dreams? We always ask young children what they want to be when they grow up, and usually the first things that come out of their little mouths are, “I want to be a doctor, dentist, lawyer, pastor, firefighter, policeman or teacher.” Very seldom do you hear them say anything else. In a child’s eyesight, if you hold any one of these positions, you are considered a HERO. And not just any hero, THEIR hero. It’s not that other job occupations don’t matter or exist, but if you think about it, these are the jobs that are most appealing to children because these are jobs that have the ability to impact and save so many lives. What’s more, is that a lot of the children who say that they want to have one of the job occupations listed above, usually veer off and venture to something else by the time they become of age to actually study or hold that occupation. Well, not Dr. Woodfork!!!!

Dr. Chianti (pronounced Key-Ahn-Tee) Woodfork had it made up in her mind that she wanted to be a dentist. She knew that one day she would be a dentist and do everything it required for her to become exactly what she wanted to become. I can remember speaking with Chianti in college about what she wanted to be while attending Jackson State University. I can vividly remember sitting at our Sorority plot on the yard discussing her degree program and talking about what was next for the both of us after JSU. After asking her about her plans, she told me that she wanted to be a dentist. The moment she told me I was inspired. I began to ask her about the amount of schooling it would take for her to finish, and I can literally remember it being approximately 10 years or more (from that point) of studying and residency by the time we got done adding everything up. I was completely overwhelmed by the amount of discipline and studying that it was going to take her to achieve her goal, but nevertheless, I believed in her and I knew she could do it.

I find it so amazing to have seen my sister progress the way that she has over the period of time that it has taken her to get here. Many of our young people have forgotten what it takes to achieve goals such as these. Our young people are forgetting that it requires consistent diligence and the utmost discipline to accomplish your dreams. We now live in a microwave society where our young people just expect things to happen right away. They expect the production of the fruit without planting the seed and watering it daily. Simply put, our young people don’t want to work anymore.  They don’t want to work for what they want. They think it should be handed to them or given to them on a silver platter…They have forgotten what it means to work hard. They have forgotten what it means to sacrifice what you want now, to have what you need later.  But aren’t you grateful to have examples like Dr. Chianti Woodfork to show your children that it can be done? Aren’t you grateful to have positive woman role models to show our young ladies that they can be whatever and whoever they want to be if they put their mind to it despite the color of their skin?

Role models that come in the form of Dr. Chianti Woodfork, DDS are an inspiration to us all. She worked for it. She believed she could do it and so she did. She refused to let anything stop her shy of reaching her goal of becoming a Dentist. She put in the time. She trained. She studied. She earned her title. The title she’s always dreamed of having.

And for her perseverance, we thank her. Dr. Woodfork, thank you for fulfilling the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Thank you for proving that Historically Black Colleges & Universities produce some of the best there are in the nation…Thank you for proving that it can be done in the faces of those who thought it couldn’t and in the faces of those who thought it wouldn’t.

We know your road hasn’t been easy, nor will it continue to be, but you made it!!! We celebrate you and your accomplishments!!! The only way from here is up!!!!! The sky is the limit for you and we wish you well in all of your future endeavors. We are so very proud of you!!!!!

WE SALUTE YOU DR. WOODFORK!!!!!
